VOSS Automotive continues on growth course

November 18, 2013
After ten months’ construction time, a modern new structure has been built. With the Technical Center, in short PTC (Polymer Technology Center), VOSS has established enhanced competence in the technological fields of plastic injection molding, tube extrusion and connecting technology such as friction, laser and ultrasonic welding at the Wipperfürth site in Germany. On a site covering 1,100 m², it thus opens up a completely new field of activity at VOSS Automotive for employees in a variety of specialist functions.

Most well-known raw material suppliers and also machinery and tool manufacturers in the field of plastics technology are based in Europe. For this reason, it was an easy decision to expediently site the new PTC geographically close to these technology partners with the goal of closer collaboration, reduced logistical expenditure and more rapid reaction times.

With this expansion in competence, VOSS Automotive Germany takes on a leading function in the international technological network for new products and processes in plastics technology. Here, the extrusion center at VOSS Brazil and the many years’ experience of the colleagues in São Paulo play a supportive and highly-valued role within the development activities of the PTC.

The new Technical Center is equipped with a multi-layer extruder that allows VOSS to produce and encase tubes of up to five layers. In addition, an integrated corrugator means that corrugated tubes can also be produced in addition to the smooth pipes. At the same time, deviating from the standard, the prerequisites were created to also process so-called fluoropolymers – high-performance plastics – which are used in extreme temperature conditions.

Within the framework of injection molding, VOSS has a barless 2k machine with 80t clamping force. Here, 2k means that components can be created during an injection process that comprises two different materials. In addition, the decisive advantage of barless machines lies in their flexibility in the sense of rapid and easy tool changing.

Both machines are equipped with the latest measuring technology, allowing processes to be observed and analyzed in detail. Furthermore, a range of test processes can be carried out in an attached laboratory to qualify our products. The machinery in this area is absolutely state of the art, and is the most modern at VOSS Automotive. Hence we are in a position to derive questions from current production and at the same time promote the development of plastics technology.

As a result of cross-location collaboration, VOSS also wants to develop new plastics products at the PTC and also corresponding processes for series production so that the company can remain on course for expansion in a future-proof manner.
